In SuSE one does have to get into using RPMs right away; Yast and YOU
(Yast online utility) do much of the work for you. Consequently, my
understanding of RPMs and how to make use of them is all theory and no
practice.

I've read the man pages for rpm (8) but that's kinda minimally
helpful. The command rpm -qa which I'm told will list all installed
packages isn't even documented properly; my docs say something about a
gpg public key. But on my box, the -qa option lists all rpms present.

If that's the case, then what does rpmqpack do and why is it so much
faster?

Anyone care to give me the fast rundown on what to do with an rpm once
I download it and drop it into some temporary spot on my hard disk?
And where is a good spot on my hard disk for such things?
