Where are your data? If they're on a separate partition, then you can
feel more confident that they won't be hosed. Before you try an
upgrade/reinstall, you might want to run fsck from the command line when
you're booted into the rescue disk. This will check the file system for
corruption, and may repair your problem.
Generally, it's a good idea to have /home on a separate partition, so
even if your / partition gets screwed up, you still have all your data.
Same goes with /var if you're running servers of most kinds.

Seg faults are caused by poor memory management on the part of the
program. If this is happening on boot, you probably have a corrupted
binary. You can either fix it by fixing the file system (fsck) or
overwriting the binary (reinstall). Either way, I'd be wary about the
hard drive, as it seems to be malfunctioning.

It will fix the errors, and if you're careful (don't format any
partitions that hold your data, etc.) you should be able to keep your
data, too.
