Hi james,
We have a utility in linux to unzip the files, No matter in what
format, they have been compressed. The utility is "tar" archive. I suggest you
can very easily use this handy utility to decompress or unzip or untar the
files.
Navigate to the path of your compressed file and try this command.
$tar -zxvf filename
I also recommend you to study the manual of "tar" archive,
$man tar
or
$tar --help
Salman.

I downloaded a zip file to my linux box and I can't seem to find any
info on how to unzip it...no winzip for linux, etc. I see gzip and
bzip2, but that seems to be it. They don't seem to be what I need.
Help.
Jim
