Hi,
If you want to use a mini-distro that will help you
learn, I'd go with Puppy Linux as it has many ways to
run, off of USB LS-120/ZIP drives, off of the CD, or a
small file on the Windows hard drive, and running in
RAM it can be quite fast. There's some built off
Debian/Knoppix like Damn Small Linux or Feather.
Puppy uses standard file packaging like Slackware, or
the mini Slax in it's various flavors. Check out
www.Distrowatch.com for more details. There's live CD
versions of Linspire and Xandros, too.
A while back I tried to play around with OS/2, but I
didn't have the right upgrades to allow for larger
hard drives. I came from the DOS world myself.
Happy learning,
Joan
