that's interesting. not trying to contradict you, but in my "personal"
experience (which is but a drop in the bucket compared to collective users
worldwide), i've had nothing but success w/WD drives.  i know that for
awhile anyway, some reported problems (apparantly my purchases occured
outside this time period or maybe i got some of the few good ones?).  so
far, i have never had a WD drive go down.  that includes both at home and at
work over a 16 year period.  OTOH, i've had both seagate and maxtor drives
fail on me.  does this mean that i'm a WD diehard?  no, but when i make my
future purchases, i will certainly keep robert's opinion of WD in mind.  and
as long as i don't have any personal experience w/WD's poor quality and as
long as their products don't conflict w/linux, i will at least keep them in
the running.

thanks robert for the input, anyone else know of reasons why WD drives and
lite-on products should be avoided when building a linux box?
