If your bootloader is GRUB, the page I cited showed you how to restore
it, after it had been wiped out.

Modern BIOS routines are a lot more configurable than older ones, so
there is no single answer more specific than 'it depends'.

If you have a BIOS where you can set a detailed boot order, that
includes floppy, LS120, Zip, CD-ROM, IDE0, IDE1, SCSI, Network, USB...
then you have a LOT of flexibility.

On an older desktop machine, the BIOS will usually only offer floppy,
CD-ROM, IDE, and will inspect only the first IDE0 HD's /MBR for a
pointer, pointing to the bootstrap or stage2 bootloader.

With Grub, for instance, stage1 in on the /MBR... a pointer, aimed
at the Linux boot partition, where Grub's stage2 is located, and which
contains a menu, with code pointing to the bootstraps of each OS, and
Linux kernel, that you can choose.

I am pretty sure this is accurate, but will not faint if one of the
old-timers makes some corrections to the procedure.
