You might want to mention what Linux distribution you are running as the 
answer might be different.
I seem to remember that it was during installation that I selected dhcp 
to get a dynamic ip address and the installer did the rest.
Things are a bit different when you want a fixed ip address but I think 
it is just as easy as getting things done in windows.
I mostly run Slackware but I have Mepis, Vector, and SuSE and each is 
slightly different to set up your Internet connection. Some use very 
automatic solutions.
