Howdy Jason,

Robert already answered your questions, but as for gcc--RedHat and some
of the other distributions that come with everything often leave the
compiler out of "everything" unless you specifically choose to install
the developer tools.

BTW both of your questions were answered in the list's Faq.  (You got a
link to it with the welcome message, but I'll post the link again.) [1]

As a CS student, you better get used to reading the docs.  :)


[1] The gcc question is answered, anyway--I don't think there's mention
that many of the everything included distros don't include gcc with the
default distribution.
