I have been using something like that. I have 6 linux versions and I 
gave from 6 to 10 gigs for each Linux and a single swap partition of 512 
megs. Same as my ram. When I install a linux distro I make one of these 
10 gig partitions to be root "/" .
and I let it use the single swap partition. This works just fine for me. 
I see many people are making all kinds of partitions but I don't see any 
benefit in doing so. I have a partition of 2 gigs for win98se and it is 
hda1. I have slack on hda2, Kanotix on hda3, extended partition is hda4, 
swap on hda5, mepis on hda6, vector on hda7, Suse10 on hda8, and on hda9 
I have Gentoo.
I made an extra partition on hda10 for saving things to. This allows me 
to play around a lot and learn stuff.
