I don't know what your trying to do, but you can change which run
level boots in yast. Yast can also be run in text mode to manually
configure things like unregcognized video and sound and network cards
and monitors.Most of what you mention here is run level 5 on suse 9.
Try ctrl alt F1 login root and type - init 3 to change level from desktop.
