Hi all,
I am using Ubuntu 5.10.
I was attempting to copy a complete home folder from one hard disk to
another and so I created a new user, and from the new user's home folder
I had the idea of first deleting all the hidden folders, before copying
across the new lot, there bye keeping all the preferences and address
books, bookmarks etc ready for use.
I did the command "rm -R .*" thinking that at the worst I would only
damage the newly made home folder.
Instead the whole partition is now unreadable.
When I boot into the other hard drive, and
"cd /dev/" and then do

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/dev$ ls hd*
hda hda1 hda2 hda5 hdb hdb1 hdb2 hdb5 hdc hdd

When I change to root and do a fdisk I get :-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hda: 20.0 GB, 20020396032 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 2434 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 2330 18715693+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 2331 2434 835380 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 2331 2434 835348+ 82 Linux swap /
Solaris

Disk /dev/hdb: 20.5 GB, 20547841536 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 2498 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1 * 1 2392 19213708+ 83 Linux
/dev/hdb2 2393 2498 851445 5 Extended
/dev/hdb5 2393 2498 851413+ 82 Linux swap /
Solaris
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/#

I can access hdb1.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# mount -t ext3 /dev/hdb1 /mnt/old
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# ls /mnt/old
dev lib proc root sbin srv sys tmp usr var vmlinuz
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~#

But trying to mount hdb2 gets me:-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# mount -t ext3 /dev/hdb2 /mnt/old2
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdb2,
       missing codepage or other error
(aren't you trying to mount an extended partition,
instead of some logical partition inside?)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# dmesg | tail
[4298895.788000] EXT3 FS on hdb1, internal journal
[4298895.788000] EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
[4299107.137000] attempt to access beyond end of device
[4299107.137000] hdb2: rw=0, want=4, limit=2
[4299107.137000] EXT3-fs: unable to read superblock
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~#

I have spent hours googling and trying various commands etc. but so far
I have not had any luck getting access to hdb2, that contains some data
that I would like to get back. Is there anyway I can do this, or is it
gone for ever?

I am sorry if this post is a bit long winded, just trying to give as
much info as I can.

Thanks for reading,
Regards
Bill.
