The Linux native file systems are ext2 and ext3.

FAT32 (aka vfat) is a Windows native file system, so no, Linux does
not require it.

Linux can use FAT 32, though, but the file system doesn't permit
Linux file permissions, so it is not a good choice for anything except
a partition that will be accessed by both Linux and Windows, like on a
dual boot system.
