I faced the same problem when trying to install Ubuntu on my Averatec
laptop. I don't know what wireless card your laptop has, but mine has a
Broadcom 4306 and it seems Ubuntu just refuses to connect to my wireless
network through that card.

I tried Mepis 6 RC2 (which is based on Ubuntu), and while it didn't work out
of the box, it took me under 5 minutes to get the laptop connected to my
WiFi network.
