Gentoo is pretty good at this right now.

I'm not sure what you're talking about.  You just have to know what's
Linux-compatible before you buy the printer.  I've not had issues with this.

This is totally distro-dependant.  Pick your distro wisely.  I'm quite
happy with Gentoo's system in this regard.
