There are several versions that seem to be easier for new users to
adjust to

Ubuntu, Freespire, PCLinuxOS, and XanderOS Free Version.

Would be the ones I would recommend.

Freespire is new but it seems pretty stable.  This can run as a live
CD also

Ubuntu is the leading distro right now due to its user friendliness.
This can run as a live CD

PCLinuxOS is based on Mandriva and can run as a LiveCD also.

Xander OS is really nice but the free version is based on the older
3.0 version of XanderOS
