I personally use Quanta Plus (kwebdevelop) for most of my work. I can work directly with the code (like vi or any other text editor), but it also offers some minor code completion and syntax highlighting. If you want graphical (WYSISYYG) clients, someone else already mentioned the Mozilla composer from the mozilla suite. I would also recommend a tool called nvu, from http://www.nvu.com/index.php It runs on Linux, as well as Mac and windows. It does a decent job of writing the code and seemed to be pretty newbie friendly.
