I am new to Linux also. I have been working on it for about 3 weeks.
I have Windows XP and Ubuntu 6.06LTS partitioned on one drive.
I have two desktops. The main computer is hardwired via modem to DSL.
Ubuntu works great on it now. Had trouble getting the printer to
work. Finally, after downloading a driver from the Lexmark website,
and about 12 commands on the terminal I got it to work. It connected
to the internet right after install.

The other computer, a desktop, also has Windows XP and Ubuntu on it.
I have a wireless USB device on it, and have had a terrible time
getting Linux to associate to an access point. I finally got it
connected a couple of days ago.

Linux has a steep learning curve. Be prepared to spend a lot of time
learning about Linux. Therefore, Linux really isn't truly "free". I
have a lot of time as I am retired. I also like a challenge.

If you want an OS that you can just turn on and it works, you are
probably better off to stick with Windows.

There are a couple of distros that might be more user friendly, like
Windows. I can think of Xandros and Mandriva that might be easy to
get going right out of the box, but you would have to shell out about
$70 for them. I haven't tried them. I am too cheap and don't like
the easy way out anyway.

I have tried 5 or 6 distros using LiveCD and none of them could I
connect to the internet right after install. It took a lot of
fiddling around. The two I would personally recommend are Ubuntu and
PCLinuxOS.

Good luck in your search

Jerry
