When you get that error, try hitting Ctrl+Alt+F2.  That should get you
to a login prompt.  Log in as root and run xorgconfig.  Make sure you
know all the details of your hardware when you run it.  It will ask you
some detailed questions.  After that, reboot as see if that solves your
problem.

Yes to all of these.  Login as root again and edit /boot/grub/grub.conf.
 It should be relatively clear which options you need to look at.  If
