I can't help with the macro programs, but I can tell of my experience with
using a Just Checking replacement.

Fedora Core 6 comes with a program called GNUCASH. It is a double entry
accounting program. After some frustration, I managed to get it setup for
my use. I have the accounts setup as, Income, Expenses, and Assets. The
"Assets" balance is my checking account balance. Unlike Just Checking,
there doesn't seem to be a "Bank Balance". As I'm only interested in my
"real" balance, this isn't a problem.

You might take a look at GNUCASH, and see if it meets your needs. I know
it is a case of overkill, for what you want, but it will work.
