Don't know if this will help, but I just finished having terrible
problems trying to reinstall my old Epson printer.
I istalled gimp-print, I downloaded the *.ppd driver, I installed it via
the CUPS site, I installed it via gnome, I installed it via GIMP,
nothing worked, nothing.
Then I downloaded and installed foomatic. I used foomatic to install
the printer and it worked great. (Foomatic is a printer management
program with gui.)
