I have an older P2 machine that I loaded the latest Debian stable
release onto this last summer. The default install used the 2.4
kernel. Has worked great.
Now, with some new hardware and features available only with a 2.6
kernel, I decided to upgrade the kernel. I first tired installing the
available Debian package for the 2.6 kernel. The install goes fine,
no errors or problems, but when rebooting, Grub displays it's
commands, but hangs after 'boot' is displayed. I then tried
downloading the kernel source and using the "Debian Way" of building
the kernel (make-kpkg). Again, after configuring, building, and
installing the kernel (no errors), Grub behaves the same, displaying
it's list of commands, but hangs after 'boot'. Finally I tried
building the kernel totally by hand. Same results, hangs after 'boot'
is displayed. Using the original 2.4 kernel, the next messages
displayed after 'boot' is the 'uncompressing Linux...' message, and
the boot continues. There are no error messages displayed, just the
echo of the commands in Grub's menu.lst. I've read and followed a
dozen different kernel howto's with no luck. I've tired both with and
without an initrd.img, have check and double checked that the obvious
kernel config options are enabled (ext3 file system, initrd (cramfs
support), keyboard, console, mouse, etc) and I'm reasonably sure that
the minimum config is correct to at least get it to boot. Enabling
Grub's debug mode doesn't produce any other messages on-screen, nor is
anything logged to any system log files.
What else can I try?

Thanks!
Dennis
