If you are using 6.10, try 6.06.1 "LTS". When the latter encounters
graphical components it doesn't recognise, it installs in VESA mode by
default like Windows.
Of course the problem may be more profound than that, in which case you
might have to give up on Ubuntu and try a distro you haven't
experimented with yet.
