Change your runlevel so that you do not use a graphical boot-up.

You will then see dmesg as it scrolls past (to quickly to read, for the 
most part), and it will dump you into a non-graphical getty... a Login: 
prompt.

Check 'man runlevel' for details specific to your distribution.
