The trouble is that each distro acts differently on each machine. For
example, I played with Ubuntu today--I tried to run the live CD on a
Gateway laptop, and it wouldn't get past the initial splash screen--then
it would give an error that it couldn't open a tty and drop into a
really basic shell. (ash, which is more of a rescue shell).
I then tried it on another old test box. Since Edgy, Ubuntu hasn't
played well with Matrox video cards, but at last that was fixed (this
was the latest Feisty version, probably still beta.)
However, when I tried to install it on that machine, it hung on
importing accounts--which I think is a poor design choice actually. I
think they should ask the user are there accounts that they would like
imported, and if not, just continue. So, I've been down on Ubuntu since
Edgy. :)
Mandriva got pretty bad for awhile, but it seems to have undergone great
improvements--it handled whatever hardware I threw at it, and wireless
configuration was easy. PCLinuxOS is the same. Vector Linux is
another--I know you haven't mentioned it but it's based on Slackware, so
it would give you a slightly different experience--many of the ones you
mention are based on Debian.
If you have time and energy, try the ones that have LiveCD's and see if
one of them hits you--that is, if one of them makes you think, hrrm, I
like that one.
After that, you can install it and see if it works for you. Most of us
went through distro-hopping before settling on one favorite or another.
