Although not blazingly fast, your hardware certainly has enough power to
support any of the standard distros.

Your status as a beginner is more of an issue than your hardware in this
case. You would probably do well to go with Ubuntu, Freespire or Mepis
(if it still exists, haven't checked recently) as they seem to be the
easiest way for a novice to learn about Linux. Of the distros mentioned,
Ubuntu is probably the best choice since it is likely the best supported
of the group.
