Knowledge of other things (eg UNIX in general) gives you deeper and more
generalisable knowledge of the specific thing (eg Linux). Linux is
aims to support UNIX i.e. you can do general UNIX things on any Linux
system, so knowing what should be supported gives you insight into how
things may work, and also what you may expect to work on other UNIX
systems.
