First, make sure you have a decent ATT/Yahoo modem/Router... one with
4 ports, to plug in 4 computers... this type (as opposed to the ones
with a single port) act as DHCP servers. I use the Netopia 4 port router.

I suggest that you use a hard wire, as opposed to a wireless
modem/router... it will work with no problems, where wireless might be
problematic.

Depending on the distro you choose, you might want to add more RAM.

Burn the distro you choose (first, make sure it is compatible with
your hardware) onto a CD, place the CD into your CD drive, and reboot.

The installation process should start on reboot, if you have the BIOS
set to check for a bootable CD drive before booting from the Hard Drive.

There will probably be an option in the installation procedure for you
to choose to wipe the entire HD, and dedicate it all to the new
installation.

There will probably be a choice near the end of the installation, when
the ethernet card is being configured, for you to select 'DHCP'...
select it.

Most Linux distros include more software (they don't usually call it
'freeware', because most Linux software is Open Source, and therefore,
costs nothing, unless you choose to make a donation) ...than you can
ever use, on the installation CD(s).

Once the install is finished, you should be good to go, and on-line as
soon as you reboot.
