Since others have covered the partitioning angle, I'm going to take a
stab at the other part of your question.

Certain Linuxes, like LinuxMint (and possibly Ubuntu, if memory
serves) by default create a sort of "rootless" account structure where
there is no root account per se; you can't log into it! For superuser
actions, one has to re-authenticate one's own user password, or
sometimes enter no password at all! This circumstance requires use of
the "sudo" command, as opposed to the "su -c" form to execute a
command as superuser. Did the installation process specifically ask
you (or her) for a root password, or did it just go straight to user
account names and passwords?

What happens when you (or she) types "su -" (that's su <dash><enter>,
without the quotes)? If it asks for a password, try the password of
the current account being used.

I seem to recall there being a procedure where one can reactivate the
root account, for more traditional style of usage, but you'd have to
look in a(n) Ubuntu or LinuxMint-specific forum for details. Or
Linspire, in this case, but the general principles would be the same.

But as others have hinted, if you inadvertently wiped the whole disk,
you'll probably need professional recovery help to get the windoze
data back -- assuming you didn't copy it off *before* you tried this
-- you should minimize further damage by changing as few things under
Linspire as humanly possible. In other words if there is any sort of
"Add/Remove/Update Software" menu option DON'T USE IT, and be wary of
using any command line procedure involving the command "yum" -- unless
wiser heads than mine advise otherwise!
