I had a similar problem with my HP Pavilion a1129n which is made to work with
Windows XP. HP was of no help because they said that the computer was not made
to work with Linux. Fedora was not the only distro that gave this error. The
only one that would install at first was MEPIS. As my hardware aged and distros
caught up to it, more distros would install without the kernel panic error. Now
I can install just about anything.

One thing that worked was to add some strings at boot up in grub. I would try
things like apm=poweroff, vga=normal, nomce, acpi=off, pnpbios=off, idc=nodma,
xdrvr=vesa, noapic or irqpoll to improve my chances. Some worked and some
didn't, depending on the distro. It was trial and error. That seems like ages
ago as things have really improved.

Since Fedora 4 is rather old, I would suggest that you try a more recent
version. If this does not work then I would suggest a more user friendly distro
such as PCLinuxOS or MEPIS (which is still in beta for the latest release).
SUSE 10.3 (just out) or Ubuntu 7.04 are also good bets. If you like Windows
look and feel you could try Freespire. I have used them all at one time or
another.

PCLinuxOS and MEPIS are very good at hardware detection. The difference is that
the first is a RPM based distro and the second is Debian based. We each have
our biases which one we prefer. I have always found Debian based distros to be
more stable and to have fewer problems with dependency issues, but then someone
else may say the opposite. If you want lots of support and huge depositories at
your disposal you can try Ubuntu in one of its many flavors (Ubuntu for Gnome
desktop, Kubuntu for KDE and others are also available. The newest SUSE is out
and it also has great hardware detection and has Novell and Microsoft behind
it, if you don't mind the connection.

The momentum is currently with PCLinuxOS (based on Mandrake, but much better)
and Ubuntu (7.10 is due on October 18 and a release candidate is available now)
which are very popular, but there are also strong user bases in smaller
distros. Check out Distrowatch.org for links to the distros.

Cheers,
Roy
