I just want to note that by "work" I mean "boot from LiveCD" AND
"install from live system", without recourse to extra, external hardware.
128MB (as Jeanette notes elsewhere) is a good minimum in general, not
just for DSL. but sometimes, especially with older hardware, you just
don't have (and can no longer get) more. But if you CAN get it, a $30
internet purchase of a 256MB DIMM (SDRAM or DDR as appropriate) can
make all the difference in the world for an older machine.
Most really current Linuxes (like Mint, MEPIS, PCLOS and other names
frequently tossed around here) will more likely want 256MB minumum.
There are Linuxes designed to run on really old hardware, but they
seem to be more targeted at the hardcore nerds (as evidenced by the
sheer alienness that fluxbox and other lesser-known windowmanagers
present to pure Win9x users) rather than regular folks who never
upgraded. I've experimented with P-I/133MHz and P-II/233mhz because I
have them lying around. I wouldn't try actually using them seriously!
The minimum machine I consider really usable is a Pentium-III/800MHz,
although the P-II/450MHz coffeehouse internet kiosk (using PCLOS)
continues to be a pleasant surprise.
