You can load put an icon on your panel by right clicking on it and choosing "Add to Panel". Choose Network Monitor. If an applet does not appear that you want you can add new ones form the Software Repositories. Load Synaptic by Clicking on the Menu Bar, System, Administration, Synapatic Package Manager. You will need to input your password.
You can change your network settings by going to System, Administration, Network on the Menu bar. Click in th etype of network you want to modify and the Properties button. You can also configure it from Network Tools, also under System, Administration. You can also change some settings under System, Preferences. In addition you can install extra packages such as Samba, Linneighborhood, etc.to manage networking. You would use either Synaptic or Adept to do this. To keep your system up-to-date, you need to have Adept Update turned on. It will run silently in the background and tell you when an update is needed by changing color. It may not show if your system is up-to-date. You can control what loads at boot time by going to System, Preferences, Sessions. Put a check in the box, to turn it on and uncheck it to turn it off. if something does not appear, click on the Add button. for updates the update-notifier should be turned on. If it is not there you will have to add it manually with the command 'update-notifier', but it should be there by default. You can disconnect temporarily from the internet if you have the network connection applet loaded into your system tray (see above). Just right click and uncheck your network connection. To reconnect reverse the process. I hope this helps.
