Thankyou for the response. All was well until I switched from a 19''CRT to a 22"LCD monitor. On following your directions I get the message "your hardware does not need any restricted drivers" Presently using a generic vesa driver. Attempting to switch using 'sudo startx'...resulted in 'mode not supported' but when I hit ctrl/alt/backspace a 1024x768 login screen came up, however when I logged in I was back to 'mode not supported' I then rebooted but this time I'm in vesa failsafe & now have an extra choice from the original 640x480 up to 800x600. When I first installed Ubuntu a faulty Nvidia FX5000 card was causing problems so removed it & reverted to my OB graphics SIS 650 is now displayed under graphics card & using a vesa compliant driver. Possibly as a result of my hardware changes I now find I have 6 variants of my xorg.conf file ( 1, 2, failsafe & so on). Regards, George.
