I would suggest you download Ubuntu via the http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download site, burn the CD with the *.iso (CD image) file, and then run it on your computer. The CD allows you to test drive Ubuntu Linux on your system without loading anything on your hard drive. It contains a nice window's like user graphic interface, a word processor, a spread sheet, image software, etc. etc. etc.... If you like what you see, that CD then has all you need to install it, even as a dual boot, onto your computer. I just purchased a Lenovo T61p "linux ready" laptop which I am succesfully running M$XP and Ubuntu Linux. The installation was very straight forward though doing full backups onto external storage devices is highly recommended before installing any new software like operating systems. I do not have experience with the other Linux versions figuring my basic single-user needs would be well satisfied by Ubuntu 7.10. Now, I am in the process of moving all my computing to the Linux side and thus far have not found any shortcoming. I waited this long for Linux to mature and it is proving to have done so nicely. Thanks to all of you who have volunteered so much to make it so..... To unsubscribe from this list, please email [EMAIL PROTECTED] & you will be removed. Yahoo!
