You don't give us enough information. We need to know what distro you are running. Not all distros install the necessary codecs by default. Some distros pride themselves on being totally open source and therefore do not install proprietary software. Most distros, but not all, will allow you to install multimedia codecs from their repositories. Sometimes you need to add some repositories to your sources list.Sometimes you will be able to get them from other sources. To fix your problem we need more info.
Ubuntu for example does not install proprietary software or drivers. You can add restricted drivers quite easily by clicking on System, Administration, Restricted Drivers Manager. To get codecs you get them through Synaptic. You can install win32codecs. Search because I do not know the section from memory. Once you have the codecs you can add a video program that will run them. The best is called vlc which is available for Linux/ Windows.Vlc is the complete package and may do the trick all by itself. To play flash movies you may need to add other libraries depending on what is installed. Some distros such as PCLinuxOS, SimplyMEPIS, Freespire and OpenSUSE install most of what you need by default. In the last two cases the companies behind the distros have made licensing arrangements with Microsoft. In the first two cases the companies use the best available proprietary software, but you may have to agree to the EULA of the owner of the copyright. Let us know how you do.
