The computer I have at work, which I have been freely allowed to
reformat any way I wish, is a Dell Optiplex GX1 500S+, P-iii/500MHz,
160MB ram. I've been having trouble with my two (other) favorite
distros on it, PCLOS and MEPIS, because of its particular built-in
sound card. I've liked VL 5.8 previously, so I thought I'd give 5.9 a
spin. The LiveCD for 5.9 is still in beta, so I just used the install
CD. Very old-sk00l dos-shell-blue install screens, but I can live
with that. Anyone who turns up their nose for that alone is a fool.
Wow, did this distro run more snappily than the other two! The
graphical bootscreen is very nice, with elegance similar to MEPIS's.
XFCE distros tend to have fewer utilities than KDE/Gnome, but looks
like the XFCE developers are catching up now, and VL included them
here. It didn't hurt that they included a favorite KDE app of mine,
k3b, and FOUR different gui web browsers (Seamonkey, Firefox, Opera,
and Dillo). Great for simultaneous logging into different accounts on
the same web portal ;). VL 5.9 also includes several other Window
Managers, Fluxbox was quite good, the others were varying degrees of
blank-screen-and-useless. One annoyance, if there's a way to have
different wallpapers on each workspace, as is common in KDE or Gnome,
I haven't figured out how to do it yet here.
Vector 5.9 is a good lightweght, even for relative newcomers. It's
crisp, quick, and nicer than ultralightweights DSL and Puppy...though
those two definitely have their uses! VL 5.9 GOLD is a keeper for me,
installed on the GX1, and in my LiveCD collection to try on other
machines.
