Subject: [LINUX_Newbies] New and confused

Having finally bitten the bullet and dumped Windows after years of

threatening to, I am loving using Fedora and I'm slowly figuring out

how to do all the things I need to BUT I seem to be totally unable to

master installing new software. Can someone tell me - preferably in

words of one syllable and in very detailed steps - how I go about

doing this? I can't seem to get the hang of installing even the

simplest things let alone the VMWare that I've been battling with for

the last week.

So please, help!

There are two versions to consider: VM Player and Server. You can use the
Player to run already made virtual machines and server to make your own. You
will need to download the version you want and get a free serial number. You
will have to register and they will email you the keys.
You have two download options: RPM for a RPM based distro and binaries. It
would be helpful to know what distro you are using. Some distros such as Ubuntu
have the header files a development libraries already installed. Others require
you to install these things first.
I can only be general because I do not have all the info that I need.
I will assume that you have downloaded the binaries and that you have all of
the necessary files.

First you need to uncompress the binary. I will assume that it is on your
desktop or home directory. Right click on the file and choose Extract here.
Then you should open the folder and you will see a file that looks like
vmware-install.pl. Note that Linux is picky about upper and lower case so you
will have to type exactly the same things.
You will need to open up a terminal and navigate to this folder. If you are
using KDE this is easy. It can be opened set to this folder from your file
manager under Tools. In Gnome you can just open the terminal and it will be set
for your home folder. If your folder is on your desktop type cd Desktop with a
capital D. If it is in your home folder then just type cd VMServer or whatever
the folder is called. You only need to type the first few letters followed by a
tab. Then press enter.

Next you will need to change to root either using su or sudo and input your
root password. Then you will type
./vmware-install.pl. If there are caps then you will have to use them. After
typing as far as the - you can just press TAB and the terminal program will
complete the line. Press Enter.
If you have all of the files properly installed then just click on all of the
defaults. However if you are missing files you will have to install them and
repeat the installation. When you get to the User Agreement press Ctrl-c to
stop it and then type 'yes'.

This will probably not be enough info. So write back with more information
about your distro and what errors you are getting.

Good luck!
