focus more on the components than the brand on the unit itself.

Intel and NVIDIA like Linux.

Linux is easier to work with on a 32 bit platform as opposed to a 64 bit
platform.

Avoid a new Atheros wifi card like the plague.  Broadcom is not much better.

So, I'd look at a 32 bit, Intel processor with preferably an Intel wifi card
and NVIDIA video.  When you load Linux on the machine, you will probably
need to go to the repository and get the NVIDIA X Server Settings to get all
the screen resolution you can, but that is just one extra step.

I suspect at the end of your search, Dell and Sony will be on your list.  My
last Sony was a very screwed up machine and I'm not inclined to buy another
one.
