Problem number one is that grub should not have been written to the hard drive, but to the pendrive. Then you need to be able to change the computer's BIOS so that the first boot device is the usb. Once this is done then the problem with removing the pendrive will disappear, once grub is removed from the hard drive.
To remove grub from the Windows drive you will need your Windows CD: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/qna/1742.html http://www.ntcompatible.com/How_to_remove_GRUB_loader_t28242.html To install grub to the pendrive: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/08/11/grub-error-21-after-full-install-to-usb-hard-drive/ Also useful may be: http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Installing_to_a_USB_Flash_Drive Roy Linux: Fast, friendly, flexible and .... free! It has changed the startup so that a grub loader screen exists,,, and hangs up if one of the kids has taken the pen drive off the machine. How can I make her happy and remove this step (GRUB loader) from her machine? How should I have done the pen drive to make it less machine dependent? I had started out Linux running the live CD which worked well except that it would eject each time shut down,,, and I never knew where the kids put it. Ideas?
