Ubuntu seems to have problems with Intel High Definition Audio chips
of various persuasions. On my HP notebook, the sound worked fine with
the *buntu 8.04 live Cds, but didn't work once they were installed on
the hard drive. It appears to be some confusion by the Ubuntu modprobe
process--the configuration file reads quite differently when running
in Live CD mode than when installed.

However, in my case, the login screen problem--making the text for the
various menu choices enormous and not being feasible to choose other
window managers and such--was something I never did find a way to
overcome. This problem cropped up about three or four Ubuntu versions
ago...and despite searching everywhere I could on the Web and filing a
bug report with Ubuntu Forums, I never could resolve it.

My solution was to install OpenSUSE 11. Everything works, thankfully,
including the Intel HDA. The only glitch was the original 800x600
graphics resolution--but that was easily fixed through YAST.

Sorry I couldn't be more help...but if you find the right lines in the
config file, you can probably alter them with a text editor (in root
mode using sudo) and have success that way.
