I got everything to work properly, all multimedia etc. This has
never been the big issue with me, however. The reason why I have not
used it much in the past is that I install lots and not everything I
use is available in 64 bit. That appears to be not as much so as in the
past. I still cannot find 64 bit Helix, but I got Realaudio to install.
There is no Quicktime, but it seems to work without Quicktime. At least
I could go the the Apple site and watch Quicktime trailers. Not sure
what gave it this capability, but it does play.

I installed
the restricted extras and added a few things including the win32
codecs. I did get a warning about flash not being installed but when I
tried to install it, Firefox said it was already installed and I could
get flash in Firefox, so not sure why the bogus warning. It came up
several times.

I was able to install from getdeb and got Wine
Doors from there and Wine from the repositories (newer version than in
the 8.04 repos) and Ultamatix to install from binary. However, Ultamtix
had a habit if crashing, which is to be expected in alphas.I have not
tried everything yet due to the crashes. It seems that AWN is still a
problem and some python apps seem to crash more frequently. But it was
noticeably zippier particulary withall of the bells and whistles I have
installed (Compiz, Avant Window Navigator, Screenlets, Google Gadgets,
etc.).

There is lots to consider here for me. I am not sure
whether I will go with the 64 bit version when it comes out, but am
leaning that way. I will definitely install 8.10, but people need to
wait for at least the betas to work properly and then only install 8.10
after you are sure that you want to go through the hassle of things
possibly not working as well. I am not averse to installing and
re-installing because it is second nature to me, but some are not so
confident. I will not wait for the final release due to all of the
traffic congestion so will likely go with a fresh installation from the
final beta.

about. I have been runniing Intrepid Ibex or Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 6, due
out next month. It isn't ready for prime time yet (lots of apps still
crash), but it is something to look forward to. I am running the AMD
64 version with Gnome. It loads faster and runs faster and according
to the following link, it has other improvements under the hood,
chiefly in improving wireless, including speed. Here is the link:

Concerning Ibis on AMD64 - Does java and firefox play nice yet? I
ended up giving up on the 64 bit version because for all I tried, I
just could not get java and firefox to work. And in todays internet
world, a browser is practically useless if it can't run java apps.
