I have a 8GB Philips Go Gear mp3 player. I have not used it much since it has a
Windows only CD and it requires Media Player 10 or higher to load music. Since
it is a nuisance to use Windows I tried to give it away to my daughter, but she
didn't want it. It is actually a nice machine with a touchscreen. It displays
pictures and has FM and voice recorder. It plays only mp3 and wma. No ogg or
flac, unfortunately.
I tried to get it to work in Linux but no distro even mounts it as a device. In
fact even Windows won't use it unless you use the CD and install the drivers. I
tried to install some programs which were supposed to make it work, but after
compiling from source, it still would not work. So, I gave up until recently
when it was suggested that a newer version of Amarok would get it to work.
I upgraded Amarok, then went to the settings and chose the MTP device and low
and behold it came up as a Philips Go Gear and I have been using it ever since.
Older versions of Amarok did not have this option and I haven't got it to work
in Rhythmbox or other media plaers, but why bother since Amarok is the complete
package. I could not get it to work with KDE4 version of Amarok, just in Gnome
or KDE using the KDE3 version.
I pass this along in the hopes that it will get some other generic media
players going in Linux.
