I wouldn't put Fedora on a server. It's too frequently broken.
Fedora is a test bed for RH, and the key word is "test." By design,
things will be put in without being fully tested--that is, more or less,
the job of the users.
This doesn't mean it is bad, but even on Fedoraforums, you'll see us
tell newcomers to use something else. :)
I would recommend, if he prefers a RedHat based distribution, CentOS.
CentOS is basically RedHat Enterprise Linux with the logos removed.
RedHat follows the GPL and makes all sources available. The CentOS
folks take those sources and rebuild it, giving a very stable platform.
While the packages and programs will be older than the latest and
greatest, for a server, I think that is of less concern than stability.
(Debian follows the same principles. Aside from their testing branch,
they are noted for their stability. Things are tested quite thoroughly
before being released, and will, therefore, usually be a bit behind in
version numbers. Note that I am referring to Debian stable, not Ubuntu
or others.)
Ubuntu also has a LTS version (Long Term Support). I think it's a
version or two or three behind the present one. That is always the
trade off. Stability comes at the cost of a much much slower release
cycle.
