You need to first add yourself to the vboxusers group, if you haven't done
this. Go to System | Administration| Users and Groups. I am not in Gnome at the
moment so the exact same interface isn't on my system. You need Unlock it by
giving your root password. Then you need to go to groups and choose the
vboxusers group. Then add yourself as a user of that group by putting an X in
the box beside your name. I think that you need to re-boot after installing
Virtualbox as well, if you haven't already done so.

Afterwards you are ready to, add a New virtual machine. First open VirtualBox.
Then Click on New. In the popup click on Next. Choose the OS first by clicking
on the down arrow. Choose the OS, say Windows XP. Then Name your VM by typing
something in the box such as WinXP SP2. Next use the slider or type in the
amount of memory to allocate to the VM. Then choose to make a New hard disk.
Click Next. You can choose either. Fixed allocates everything up front and
dynamically expanding keeps it small and allows it to grow the size you
allocate. I prefer Fixed because it is faster, but Dynamic saves hard drives
space for now. Next you will have to choose the size. A default is given that
is adequate. Allow more if you expect to install lots. Don't skimp. If you
chose Dynamic it will be quicker now, but it will run slower. If you chose
fixed it will take time to create the image. Click next when it is done, then
Finish.

You need to do some things before starting the VM.

Click on Settings.

General: you can adjust the RAM and Video RAM allocated to the VM here. Also
you can choose boot order.
Click on CD/ DVD and then put an X in the Mount box to enable CD. choose the
device if there is more than one and Enable Passthrough

If you have an ISO you can also mount it. Otherwise you will need to put your
CD in the device you indicated in this section
Audio: Enable and choose OSS (it may or may not work right off)
Network: Enable. Choose your device or accept default.
USB: Enable
Shared Folders: Add one by clicking on the + at the right

Click OK and put your disk in the drive (unless you chose ISO). Then start the
VM. Install as usual. Use the whole drive when prompted.

Good luck!

Roy
