I've tried some distributions. Currently I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 in my
acer laptop, because it is very tricky to make wireless run in this
machine, and is the only distrubution (and the only version) that
worked in this laptop. It was fast, at first, but now it runs very
slowly, like a Windows laptop.
I used Sabayon Linux too, and I liked much more than Ubuntu, but later
I tried Ubuntu and I didn't have to time to go back to Sabayon Linux
again (and I didn't remember how I managed to make wireless work).
Sabayon Linux is a very nice distro that runs KDE. It ran a lot
faster than Ubuntu.
I installed Fedora 8 in my wive's office and it runs PERFECT and fast
in a desktop computer. I installed that distro because it is a 3
years old desktop, and it uses a Wireless USB pen. Fedora recognized
automatically that device and made it run out of the box.
Next month, in my vacation, I will try to install OpenSuse 11.0 in
this machine, I tried the LiveCD and I liked it very much (but
wireless didn't work either, and I had to insert acpi=off doapm in the
options to make it run, I still don't know if ACPI is needed to make
wireless work).
If you want support... Gentoo is the right distro. I often visit the
forums in several distros. The worse is maybe OpenSuse, and the best,
is Gentoo, you ask for help and in few hours you have A LOT of help,
support, and opinions. The second best is Ubuntu.
