This is a fairly easy one - The reason for the slow boot time is due
to Ubuntu attempting to configure your network interface while not
actually connected to a network. I'll assume here that you probably
connected to a network to do some updates then disconnected from the
network. This is a common issue with Linux and laptops. There have
been many threads on how to make Linux ignore the disconnected
interface. I'm not sure that it has been completely resolved.

Your Nvidia issue has to do with either su privileges or a missing
file. I ran into this same issue. If I recall, I was able to solve it
by running the nvidia app with sudo. I'm not at my Linux machine at
the moment so I can't give a definite answer. Also, be sure that
/etc/X11/xorg.conf actually exists.

Hope this is helpful,

Michael
