I have to say, Mint is the one I'm recommending for newcomers now. I was playing with the live CD, it saw I had NVidia, downloaded the drivers, and though it lied and said I needed a reboot, a simple ctl+alt+backspace did it. Very impressive. Not to mention, as one reviewer said, it includes <gasp> useful multimedia codecs.
