Scott said: Once again, Ubuntu does it right and Fedora doesn't. Sigh. Fedora
apparently did much, maybe even most (though I don't know) of the work
on ext4.
I think that Debian did quite a bit, so maybe it was a collaborative effort. It
has been announced to be available in the upcoming Fedora 11.
Justin said: First off, very cool news, thanks for sharing! Second, isn't
Jaunty still alpha?
Yes Jaunty is in late alpha, but quite stable. A word of caution about ext4,
though. While it is smoking fast, you can only pull files one way ext3 to ext4.
You cannot pull files from the ext4 partition while in ext3fs, yet.
Jaunty itself is great. I have had no problems with it. I test lots of alphas
and betas and am used to crashes, but Jaunty has been the exception. My boot
time for Jaunty is under 20 seconds from grub to login, and I have added lots
to the original installation. That is roughly half of the time for Intrepid
which is still quite fast for me. My Windows installation is about the same as
Intrepid, but then I can't use it because I get an hourglass for several
minutes after you see the desktop. Too many updates and stay resident in memory
apps, I guess.
My digression:
Fortunately it isn't often that I use Windows. I got a Bamboo tablet for
Christmas that I use in Windows because the software that came with it was for
Windows (Photoshop Elements and Corel something or other). It works out of the
box with Linux, but I can't get the pressure sensitivity to work. I have tried
to compile the drivers, but they have messed up xorg everytime, so I have given
up. I don't have that kind of time to devote to fixing X everytime it messes
up, so I will use Windows.
One of the fun things that I have done in Windows is to install KDE4. It has
not replaced the desktop, unfortunately, but it has given me some of the great
KDE apps to use in Windows. I have also added virtual desktops to Windows, so
it feels more like home. That is the upside. The downside is that it is still
Windows and there is nothing more maddening than being asked to reboot every 9
minutes once you have started a project. Fortunately I found a fix for that. It
is a small untility that I keep on my desktop, called Leave Me Alone! I did not
give it that name, but it means that I am not alone in being irritated by
Windows. All of the things that we take for granted in Linux come to light when
you go back to Windows, even for a moment.
If anyone knows of an easy way to get pressure sensitivity with the Wacom
Bamboo in Linux, that will not mess up my xorg.conf file, let me know.
