Did you install it by itself, or through Wubi. (That is, did you run
Wubi from Windows, or just run a normal Ubuntu install, choosing the
logical drive as your partition?)
If you did the second one, and the Windows system crashed, but the
system boots from Ubuntu's grub, you should be able to boot into the
Ubuntu system, if I'm understanding your question.
