Had 500 MB ram and and a 3 GHz Pentium IV with integrated graphics. You should be able to install just about anything on there that is not using 3D on the desktop, assuming your processor is decent. It would probably help folk answer that question if you mentioned the processor/graphics card, btw. For what it is worth, with the setup I described above, KDE 4.X was manageable but fairly slow and a drag to try to do much on, gnome 2.X worked great, but running from live CD was sluggish.
