At least as a general strategy, I have to agree.  For some specific
cases some other things might make sense.

At least now with the ELF stuff we are not tied exclusively to linux,
so those are real options.

This is one of those areas I really want to play in but I don't
quite have the time right now.

One of the possibilities I want to look at for failsafe booting is
a minimal read-only floppy driver implementing fill_inbuf.  That or
a serial driver.  So there is some way to recover if you flash a bad
kernel.
